Is there any life left in Microsoft's last game console?
Yes. Yes there is.
Especially at this price: Dig Jungle (via Rakuten) has the refurbished Xbox 360 E (4GB) for $89.99 shipped. That's the lowest price I've seen, especially for this compact, quiet E model that was introduced last year (shortly before the Xbox One).
Why bother with this "outdated" console? Simple: there's a massive catalog of incredible games available for it. Even better, because the 360 has been around forever and was recently supplanted by the One, those games can be had for cheap. Hit up Craigslist and eBay and you can find big bundles -- as well as individual titles -- for peanuts.
What's more, game developers are still supporting the 360, and probably will for awhile -- so you can continue to enjoy the latest releases. Destiny? FIFA 15? Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor? These high-profile newcomers are all available for Xbox 360.
Meanwhile, the box ventures into Roku territory by streaming the likes of HBO Go, Hulu Plus and Netflix (though some services require an Xbox Gold subscription). And if you're still running Windows Media Center, the 360 makes a great Media Center Extender.
Does it matter that it comes with only 4GB of storage? If you plan to download games and other content, yes -- but you can plug in an inexpensive flash drive to greatly expand your available space. Here's a 32GB USB drive for $16.99, for example.
Most of the Xbox 360 refurbs I see are missing certain accessories or have little or no warranty. This one appears to have all the original items -- controller, AV cable (though you'll want HDMI), and even the one-month Xbox Live trial. Plus, it includes a one-year warranty.
So before you drop $500 on an Xbox One, consider getting your game on for a lot less. The 360 has rarely been priced lower, and world-class games can be yours for a fraction of their original cost. What's not to like?
